Briya School, D.C.
One of our most impressive projects is the extensive green roof installed on the steeply sloped roof of The Briya School. This project demonstrates the limitless potential for integrating green infrastructure into challenging roof spaces. Awarded for the redevelopment of the Mamie D. Lee Campus—an underutilized public school building in Washington, D.C., originally built in 1967—Bridges and Briya Public Charter Schools embraced this opportunity to innovate.
The facility’s unique sloped roof was meticulously designed to support a robust green roof system, crucial for meeting the city’s stormwater management and zoning requirements. This green roof not only enhances stormwater treatment on-site but also serves as an educational resource, with students participating in its planting and upkeep. The project earned LEED 2009 Schools Gold certification, thanks to its use of durable, recycled materials and its commitment to exceptional indoor and outdoor environmental quality
